I am excited to share the inaugural issue of Poetic Visuals, a journal that explores the poetics of photography through the intersection of language and images. Volume 1: Intersections can be downloaded for free using the download button at the bottom of this page.
This journal is a collaborative experiment with Murray Livingston, a fellow photographer who shares a deep interest in these topics, and began as a casual conversation over Instagram over a year ago.
In this issue, I write about the concept of photographic poem, developing a thesis on how poetry can inform composition and how one finds meaning in image making.
Murray explores the concept of visual languages, discussing the process of compositional design and how the act of photography itself can lead to new ideas. He also shares brand new images from a long term-project: This Land Remembers.
We also recruited a couple other contributors: Paulo Valdivia, who delves deep into visual design thinking as he uncovers how perception informs our photos and life itself, and Madeleine Bazil, who shares a reflective poem on life in the aftermath of wildfire.
This journal is free to download but we have decided to accept voluntary donations, 100% of which will go to the National Parks Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of the US National Park Service. Donations can be made through Murray’s website; click the Donate button below for more info.
