This collection is a little love note to the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter.
When my wife and I traveled to Iowa last year to visit my parents for the holidays, I felt like I was seeing the freshly fallen snow with new eyes. Up early every morning to tend to a 4-month-old, I found myself gazing out the windows, spellbound by the dune-like swirls, drifts, and ripples that caught the pastel colors of the pre-dawn winter light.
For the first few days of our visit, the temperatures were too cold to venture out with a camera. (I consider myself a pretty adventurous person, but a daytime high of -8°F is no joke.)
So I continued to admire the scenery from the windows until the temperature reached 3° one morning, which I deemed warm enough to brave the elements for some photography. I bundled up and made a couple laps around my parents’ house before I began to lose feeling in my fingers. I repeated the exercise again the next morning, then again that evening.
The images you see here are the results of those three forays into the cold. Each was made using a 27mm prime lens, handheld as I followed my eye and composed quickly (while I still had enough dexterity to operate my camera).
